Planning Out My Week

While most people sit and enjoy their Sundays off, I have a different routine.  You see, I am a busy sedation dentist in Washington DC and it seems that there isn’t a quiet moment during the week.  Yes, that means business is good, but I still like to find some quiet time in between patients to gather my thoughts.

In fact, that is why I take some time for myself on Sundays to see if I can somehow find some extra time during the week to get a break.   In fact, if it didn’t work out that there was at least a little bit of time for me to get out of the office each day (to take a walk, get a coffee, or just see the sun), I would go a little crazy.

But thankfully my secretary does a wonderful job making sure that we are all booked up, but that there is time for me to make my little escapes from the shop.  In fact, I don’t know what I would do with her – she knows what helps me to stay focused and busy without going crazy.

Needless to say, there is never a dull moment in the office – I am always booked solid with a breath of fresh air for myself a couple of times per day.  That is the price of success I guess.

Trying to Figure Out my Future

One of the hardest decisions that I ever had to make was what I wanted to do with my life.  I really envied my friends that knew what they were doing right after high school when I was torn between my two loves: cooking and engineering.

I wanted to be an engineer because I loved to build things ever since I was a child.  It started with an early fascination with building blocks to a love of carpentry in my teenage years.  I had a knack with building something I visualized (and was good at math too), so engineering definitely seemed like a good choice.

But my true love was cooking and it was something that I had always wanted to pursue.  Even though I was good at building things, I was even better at crafting a meal that would leave a smile on your face and bring life to your taste buds.  I know that it isn’t want my parents had envisioned for me, but they could see it in my eyes that it is what I truly wanted.

So, I have collected a list of cooking schools that I wish to attend and I am going to apply to them and hopefully I will get accepted.  From there, who knows where my future will take me – I guess I will just have to figure that out.

End of The Year Home Business Review

The end of the year is practically here. That means that it’s time for me to do my annual review of my home business. I do this every year to make sure that I am on track with my goals. It also helps to keep me on top of my game as far as making sure that I have the best services, equipment and co-workers for my company.

Some of the things I’ll be doing as part of my annual review include:

  • Reviewing all of my service providers. For example, I will read through web hosting reviews to learn about what the best rated web hosting companies are offering. I won’t necessarily change the web host that I have because I’m happy with the company but I will know if something better is out there.
  • Reviewing the year’s goals and setting new goals. I always make annual goals for the business. Some of these are financial goals and others are related to my desires for furthering the company. I will review last year’s goals to see if they were met. I will set new goals based on that information.
  • Reviewing how beneficial it’s been to work with certain people. I hire subcontractors and work with collaborators on various projects. I’ll make a list of these people and make sure that I’m happy enough with the results of the past year to continue to work with these people.
  • Reviewing how I spend my time. I think it’s important to know how many hours I’m working and what I’m doing during those hours. I’ll review that and see if any modifications are necessary in the new year.

Do you do an annual review of your home-based business?

Should You Let Employees Take Online Classes at Work?

One of the biggest problems that offices have is the misuse of time. Many employees waste time on their computers. This ends up costing the business money. The business is paying the employee to be there while the employee is simply checking Facebook or watching YouTube videos. But what if your employees were doing something more useful with their time?

Some businesses are considering the option of allowing their students to take online classes during the hours that they are supposed to be working. The stipulation, of course, is that the classes must benefit their work in some way. For example, in an office place where Cisco Training is beneficial the employees might be allowed to do their online Cisco Training Courses during their working hours.

This is an interesting twist on the idea of an employer paying you to go to school. A lot of businesses still use the old model of paying for some of your education outright. In this case, the student foots the bill of the class. However he or she is getting paid a normal salary to complete the class during working hours. The employer probably doesn’t lose much money because that time might’ve otherwise been wasted on Facebook. It could be a win-win situation for employers and employees alike.

Tips for Enjoying a French Restaurant

franceDining at a French restaurant is different from dining at any other type of restaurant. It is not simply about enjoying French food. It is about an entire experience.

Here are some tips for enjoying the experience of dining at a French restaurant:

  • Fully immerse yourself in the experience. The French restaurant is designed to delight all of the senses.
  • Learn a little bit of French vocabulary before you go. It will be more fun if you can order some of the items in their natural tongue.
  • Dress for the occasion. Dress up to go to a French restaurant. If you’re taking your kids along then put them in some cute European boutique clothing like that sold by Catimini or Room Seven.
  • Plan for a long meal. Take all of the time that you need to enjoy a multi-course meal. Enjoy a little bit of everything. The trick to eating French food is to taste a lot of rich foods without overindulging in any of them.
  • Get a designated driver. You should always enjoy great wine with French food so plan on having someone who isn’t drinking there to drive you home.
  • Don’t skip dessert. It’s the best part of the meal!

Reduce your vehicle’s carbon footprint

Summary: Cut your vehicle’s greenhouse gas pollution and carbon footprint

”’Fuel Injectors”’
If your vehicle is 4 years or more old, replacing the fuel injectors will do wonders for you. Why? Think of a fuel injector as a mister, similar to a water mister for your plants. The purpose of this mister is to create a fine mist out of your fuel so that it can burn. Remember, liquid fuel DOES NOT BURN – it has to be atomized or it will only become pollution, not power.

Now include in this picture the fact that your fuel is sent to these fuel injectors at high pressure. As with any fluid going through a small hole at high pressure, the hole will eventually wear larger than it was originally. Once this happens, instead of misting your fuel, your fuel will be squirted. That is, liquid fuel will now be entering into your engine as a stream.

And again, liquid fuel cannot burn! Your mileage will suffer and you will be sending more pollution into the air because you are not atomizing your fuel completely.

While replacing your injectors is on the short side of a pricey affair, the trade-off is a better running vehicle with more power and cleaner air for you to breath.

”’Air Filters”’
Just as pollution controls clogging up your exhaust will cause your vehicles to work harder to simply move, so will a bad air filter. If you have ever tried to breath through a bad air filter when you were painting, you would know what your engine is up against with a dirty air filter inside of it.

Also, most air filters are made out of a type of paper that is cheap and replaceable. However, you are using paper that will not be recycled when discarded, so you are ‘killing trees’ with these filters.

Not only that, but paper air filters really don’t breath very well in the first place! And if you put on that bad air filter mentioned above and tried to run any distance, you would soon want a better air filter rather badly.

If you are using a small vehicle, you have alternatives that will cause you to end the waste of paper air filters and that are readily available over the counter at most auto parts stores. For larger vehicles, your filters will have to be special ordered from such as K&N.

Not only will you stop killing trees, your engine will run better for it and your mileage may improve as well due to better engine breathing.

A very simple, inexpensive measure can be taken to drastically cut your vehicles greenhouse gas pollution. Here is a California smog report of a modified vehicle: [http://engineecology.com/upload/smog_test.pdf] Since more than that would be considered selfless promotion, I leave you with the above as a good starter.
