Tip the Balance with Great Customer Service

If you already own and operate your own ecommerce business, you probably already realize that there are a ton of other businesses out there that do exactly what you do.  So what incentive does a customer have to come to you instead of your competitors?  It is up to you to come up with something that will tip that balance, and convince customers to bring their business to you instead of taking it to someone else.

For instance, say you have a website where you sell KWA airsoft equipment to hobbyists.  There are tons of other sites selling airsoft pistols online, so you need to create a reason for customers to choose your website over the others.

Obviously, the first way to do that is to make sure that potential customers find you early on in their search.  That takes a lot of online marketing to higher search engine rankings, and recommendations from forums and blogs.

However, simply marketing is not enough.  You also need to do something to prove to potential customers that you are the best business to buy from.  You can do that by promising — and following through with — exceptional customer service.  Here are a few ways to offer a level of customer service that can tip the scales in your favor:

  • Offer a no questions asked, money back guarantee
  • Make it easy for potential customers to contact you with questions, via phone, email, or even online chat
  • Communicate with buyers about when their package is shipped, and follow up with them afterward to make sure they are satisfied with their purchases
  • Make communications personal and avoid form letters whenever possible

Remember, if there are a gazillion companies out there offering exactly the same products as you, then it’s the service where you must set yourself apart from the competition!
